What is Gua Sha and How is the “Jade Finger?Scraper Used Gua Sha (Cao Gio in Vietnamese and Kyung Rak in Korea) is an Asian treatment that may predate other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is performed by, oiling the skin to reduce abrasion and then scraping. This brings out the Sha or red marks, which will be darker the worse the condition. This is practiced in SEA as well, often using nothing more than a coin or spoon to scrape. Amazingly where disorders are hidden, red spots appear in the skin similar to hemorrhage. Because the scraping is on the oily skin the patient will hardly feel pain - neither during nor after the treatment. There is no permanent damage and the red spots will fully disappear within a few days. Gua Sha has the following affects detoxification, improvement of blood circulation, reflex effects on the organs, stimulation of the immune system, removing blockades, treating pain, clarity of mind, stimulation of creativity and inner balance. The scraping brings up stagnated blood, moving fluids and clearing obstructions of the energetic channels. This is affective whether the condition is hot, cold excess or deficiency. Mostly scraping is done on the arms, back or neck. I usually work over the gall bladder, bladder and liver meridians. Results are immediately seen and can include relaxing muscles unresponsive to massage, reducing pain, reducing fever and eliminating anger. When scraping, first lightly apply oil to the area to protect the skin. Next, firmly hold the scraper, and rub it back and forth over the desired area with strong pressure. The firm pressure is important, as too light a pressure is irritating and doesn't yield results. It is better to use firm pressure and a quick motion and then lighten up if necessary. It can be painful, but a 'good' pain, as at the same time the pain of the stiff congested area becomes tremendously reduced. If it is objectionable to the client, lighten up on your pressure or stop altogether. The skin will get very red where there is congestion, just as in cupping, even resulting in “Sha?or small red skin marks. Avoid breaking open the skin or causing bleeding. Gua Sha is contraindicated for use over areas where there are skin irritations, broken skin, ulcers, allergic skin conditions, boils or over the lower back or abdomen of pregnant women. I am sure you will find the “Jade Finger?very easy to hold and for applying correct pressure. As it is made of Jade it also has the energetic properties for healing attributed to that stone. The shape also allows it to be used to apply acupressure therapy while applying Guasha therapy. ¡¡ ¡¡ |
