Fushun Amber
During my trip to China I visited the coal mining city
of Fushun. When the coal is mined, amber pieces are
found in the coal. These pieces are carved into
jewlery, small statues and bottles. The coal is a very
hard variety that is easily carved and polished as
well. Many small shops in the city sell these
carvings. The coal sculptures are large from 1 to 3
feet tall. The amber carvings are 1 to 2 inches.
Fushun Amber is characterized by a mix of yellowish to
black color. The black is the presence of coal in the
amber.
